Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about Recordside.

What the software does today, what it does not do, and what is still being built. Where a feature is implemented but not yet released commercially, we say so.

The basics

What is Recordside?

Recordside is a desktop practice system for musicians, made by Oak & Measure. It brings the songs you are learning into one practice workspace: separate instruments, play alongside the original recording, record audio or video Takes, review your progress, and plan what to work on next.

It is in development and is not yet commercially available.

Who is Recordside for?

Guitarists and bassists first, and vocalists, drummers, keyboardists, and anyone else who practices with recordings. It suits musicians who learn songs from the record, take lessons or courses, and want their practice materials and history in one place.

Do I need Guitar Pro files?

No. Guitar Pro integration and scrolling notation and tablature are there when they help, but you can practice with the recording alone, with stems, by ear, or from memory. Notation is optional, not a requirement.

Working with your music

Can I use my own music?

Yes. Recordside is built around recordings you already own. You import them into a local song library. Recordside does not sell or supply licensed commercial songs, and there is no music subscription.

Does Recordside separate stems?

Yes. Recordside can separate a recording into instrument parts, such as vocals, guitar, bass, drums, piano, sax and brass, and other instruments, depending on the recording and the separation model you choose. Each stem has its own volume, Mute, and Solo, and you can save custom practice mixes.

You can also import stems you already have, and Recordside aligns them automatically where it finds a reliable match. No separation is perfect, and results differ from song to song.

Can I practice without stems?

Yes. You can practice with the original recording on its own, with pitch-preserving speed changes, section looping, saved practice sections, speed training, and a metronome with count-in. Stems are a tool you can reach for, not a step you have to take.

Does Recordside need an internet connection?

The core practice experience works offline, without a cloud account or an ongoing synchronization service. A connection is only needed for optional things: downloading separation models, AI requests you choose to send, and future connected features such as Rooms.

Where are my files stored?

On your computer. Imported recordings, separated parts and practice mixes, audio and video Takes, practice history and notes, repertoire status, and learning resources all stay on your machine.

Optional features you switch on may send information to the services they use. Nothing is uploaded to us in the background.

Recording and progress

Can I record myself?

Yes. You can record audio Takes right inside your practice session, review them alongside the recording, and keep or discard each one. Kept Takes form a local history you can return to.

Can I record video?

Yes. Video Takes let you review your hands, movement, posture, and technique. There is a live camera framing preview, a movable and resizable picture-in-picture, and MP4 export of Video Takes.

Recordside is not a multitrack studio, a video editor, or a publishing tool.

Does Recordside analyze my playing?

In a limited, specific way. When a suitable reference is available, Recordside can show timing patterns in a Take against the original instrument part, and point out passages that may need more practice. This currently works with compatible bass or guitar reference parts, and depends on how confident the match is.

It does not grade note accuracy, pitch accuracy, posture, or musical talent, and there are no scores, streaks, or leaderboards.

Does Coach require AI?

No. Coach plans from your goals, repertoire, available time, learning resources, and practice history. Optional AI assistance can help you shape a goal or tidy up a learning outline you paste in, with your consent and your review before anything changes.

Coach is not an autonomous teacher, and it does not quietly rewrite your progress.

Does Recordside replace a teacher or a course?

No. It does not replace the teachers, courses, and books you already use. It helps you organize them as Resources, connect them to the songs and skills you are working on, and put them to work in your practice.

Availability

Is Recordside available to download?

Not yet. Recordside is in development and is not commercially available today. We will not announce a date we cannot keep. The updates list is where availability news will appear first.

Is Recordside available for Mac?

Recordside is being built for Windows first. macOS is planned, but there is no date for it yet.

What is Recordside Rooms?

Rooms is a planned extension that lets a musician share a live Recordside practice workspace with a teacher, bandmate, or fellow musician. The guest joins from a browser, without installing Recordside or creating an account, and the host admits them before anything is shared.

It is in development, planned for Phase 1, and not available today. It is not designed for low-latency synchronized jamming.
